Houston, TX – August 3, 2026 – A newly released research paper is highlighting cutting-edge AI technology helping to validate critical hardware for LEGEND-1000, a major next-generation physics experiment. Pneumatic and Hydraulic Company LLC’s Katy facility helped enable this work, hosting the pressure testing that generated the data behind the study.
The paper, “Vision AI Agent for Continuous Material Monitoring of LEGEND-1000 LoFi Reentrant Tube,” is available as a preprint on arvix.org and is currently undergoing peer review at PRX Intelligence. The paper describes an AI-driven computer vision system developed by the research team to measure material strain in copper test cylinders, components related to the Reentrant Tube, a critical structural part of the LEGEND-1000 detector, which is designed to operate reliably for over a decade in a cryogenic liquid argon environment.
Four of the test cylinders described in the paper were hydrostatically pressure-tested to failure at Pneumatic and Hydraulic Company’s Katy, TX facility, which specializes in the design, construction, installation, servicing, and testing of high-pressure systems for aerospace & aviation, petrochemical, construction & heavy equipment, and oil & gas, among other industries.

The research addressed a practical challenge encountered during testing: conventional strain gauges attached to the cylinders produced unreliable or incomplete data, prompting the research team to develop a non-contact, video-based measurement approach using AI-assisted computer vision instead.
